The t-test is a bivariate statistical test that can be used to draw conclusions about hypotheses. It is used when either comparing two different independent groups to “a continuous dependent variable,” which is called an independent samples t-test, or when comparing two separate bits of data from one same group on a “continuous dependent variable,” which is called a paired samples t-test. Most commonly it is used in research to analyze one outcome in two groups of people. The larger the t is, the more differences there are in the groups. The measurements used in the formula to calculate the t include group means, variability, degrees of freedom, and sample size; a t-test uses nominal level for the independent variable, and interval or ratio levels for the dependent variable.Â
My hospital recently made it a policy to have 2 RNs present on insertion of Foley catheters in order to decrease rates of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) from catheter insertion. An independent groups t-test could be used in a research study to compare whether or not the rates of infection decreased in those that had 2 RNS present as opposed to one. The two independent groups would be the admitted patients who have Foley catheters inserted by one RN versus the admitted patients who have Foley catheters inserted by two RNs. The dependent variable would be the average rates of infection. The null hypothesis is that the rate of infection did not differ between the groups. The research hypothesis is that differences between the outcomes of the groups do exist.Â
