The United States has significant strengths and weaknesses when it comes to universal healthcare. Some of the strengths include excelling at prevention measures including breast cancer screening and flu vaccinations when compared to their global counterparts (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2020). However, the United States also has the lowest life expectancy and the highest rates of hospitalizations from chronic diseases (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2020). Patients in the United States typically have higher rates of obesity and often present with one or more chronic conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension leading to complicated hospitalizations and sometimes death. Additionally, the United States spends and utilizes advanced medical technologies significantly more when compared to other industrialized nations (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2020).Â
To begin, I agree with all the points presented by the CommonWealth Fund. The United States as a whole has various challenges to overcome when it comes to healthcare. Nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers are clearly impacted by all the factors mentioned in the article including but not limited to healthcare spending, quality improvement, and health outcomes. The role of the nurse practitioner is significant and has the potential to shape the quality of care, outcomes, and overall data. Overall, the article developed by CommonWealth Fund exemplifies there is room for improvement on all levels when it comes to healthcare in the United States. Our country could benefit by taking a global perspective and identify ways to improve our current system that is not currently sustainable. Change is necessary for Americans to have accessible, effective, and quality healthcare. If revisions are not made in our current healthcare system, there could be detrimental effects in our future.
