St1D: Case Study 2: “T”
Discussion Topics, Unit 1, Steps Zero, One and Two: Getting Started
Scenario 2:Â You are chairing your hospital’s newly created EBP, research, and QI council. One of the medical-surgical units is having an issue with an increase in catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and wants to address it. After looking at the policy and internal data from other units, you notice the policy for urinary catheter removal was updated 6 months ago to include a nurse-driven protocol for urinary catheter removal, but you notice there is no evidence to support this policy. The council members have decided all inquiries will start with the EBP process in order to get into the literature and see if a body of evidence exists to address the issue or whether there isn’t a sufficient body of evidence, requiring we move to research. As the council gets started they use the templates in Appendix A to create their PICOT question. A great debate arises as to whether or not they need a “T” in their PICOT question. The group is divided.
2A:Â What do you think? Is a “T” needed in this question? Provide the rationale behind your answer.
