In critical thinking, there is a fallacy called an appeal to authority, which is common act individuals engage in. We must realize there are at most times two sides of every debate and just because someone has a degree or specializes in a field does not mean they are not venal. When I have taught philosophy courses, I always begin by saying we must as academics and consider cui bono (Who benefits). In modern times, the same idea is to ‘follow the money’. By discovering how individuals benefit from a position we academics are better prepared to objectively consider a person’s viewpoint, even a scholar. Please share some of your insights.
