1. Imagine you are the team leader on a busy intensive care unit. After giving the team members their patient assignments for the day, you notice that several RNs and float nurses are upset with their assignments. The unit is currently understaffed, and all team members are required to take on more responsibility than usual in order to keep the unit running efficiently. You overhear one RN say she’d rather quit than start taking on additional duties. a. As a leader, how would you handle this situation?
b. What type of leadership style would you feel most comfortable using?
c. How might your response to this situation be different depending on whether you were working in a magnet hospital or a nonmagnet hospital?
2. Review the leadership styles of the people who have been authority figures in your life. What makes them effective or ineffective leaders? Which leadership styles have you tried? Which do you feel will be most helpful to you as you try to help patients/families and healthcare teams achieve health goals?
