Your working in a community service agency and have just been appointed the health and safety representative (HSR). The organisation has not previously placed much focus on health and safety.
You have just completed a due diligence and have discovered that workers:
are not adhering to workplace policies and procedures for safe work practices
do not know how to identify hazards including:
any client-related risk factors or behaviours of concern
manual handling hazards
risks of infection
do not know how to correctly report incidents to designated persons
are unsure of what health and safety records must be kept or how to fill them out
do not know how to apply control measures
are not using the correct manual handling procedures
are not following precautions to prevent the spread of infection
are not recognising and applying additional precautions to prevent infection
have not participated in workplace safety meetings and consultative activities
do not maintain currency of safe work practices
have not been reflecting on their own levels of stress and fatigue
have not been participating in debriefing
do not know how to respond in emergency situations
are unsure of the relevant health and safety legislation and codes of practice, by creating a health and safety information document, including simple procedures, which can be distributed to all employees to educate them about the issues.
To ensure readability and to achieve maximum impact:
ensure that information is presented in a logical order
ensure that information is well organised
ensure that information is presented in plain English
use pictures/ illustrations/ charts where necessary
include statistical information (eg how many workers are injured in manual handling related incidents each year)
