How would you respond to this person, who has answered these three questions: What interactions have you had with older adults? How do you generally feel about them?  Why would you be interested in taking a Gerontology course? Was it interesting, what did you like, etc. Looking for opinions. Please explain in good detail, min 1 hundred words. Looking for opinions.

I actually spend most of my time with older people. Between my grandmother living with me and working at a retirement home it feels like I spend more time with older people than I do people my age, but I’m not complaining. Every day I look forward to going to work to talk to the residence. I have been there for almost 6 years, so I have built some really strong bonds with a lot of them that we look at each other as family. Up until about September the retirement home was taking very serious precautions concerning COVID 19 which meant a lot of the activities and socialization opportunities were restricted. When I watched the video on Immigrant Seniors getting together, one of the first things that was said were that these activities bring them together because otherwise they feel isolated and get upset that “the kids are always busy”, and I really related that to what the residents tell me about their experience during these difficult times. A lot of the residents depend on simple things like coming down to the dining rooms to eat with their friends or playing cards, so going from that to complete isolation was hard and really took a toll on their mental well-being. Not to mention a lot of them don’t have family that comes to visit or family that lives in state. During these years of their lives, it is crucial to keep them active and socialized for their overall wellbeing.
I am so excited to take this course because I love working with older people and I want to expand my knowledge in this study. When I graduate, I hope to continue working in the gerontology field!Â
